Ayurveda is a powerful system of mind-body medicine covering all aspects of physical, mental, and spiritual healing through dietary recommendations, exercise routines, lifestyle modifications, psychotherapeutic practices, massage and herbs. It is very closely related with yoga and meditational practices, with yoga being the mental and spiritual aspect of healing and Ayurveda as the medical management of health. Ayurveda assigns all matter/energy interactions in the world to a scheme of five primal elements (metaphorical concepts that describe physiological processes and environmental interactions): earth, water, fire, air and ether. For ease of conceptualizing the actions of these energies and for therapeutic applications in assessment and treatment, the five elements, as they manifest in the body, are further condensed into three primal metabolic forces, called doshas. These doshas ( vata, pitta, kapha ) underlie all of the theoretical foundation of Ayurvedic assessment and therapeutics.
Ayurvedic nutrition comprises of dietary recommendations aiming towards balancing the doshas. Each person is unique. As different as the body types are, so, too, are nutritional requirements. Ayurveda recognizes this, and emphasizes the correct diet for each individual. Diet is the first and most basic building block of good health in Ayurveda, and can be effective treatment for disease, even when used alone. It is a reliable and safe therapy, and can be used by anyone as self care. Improper diet is the main underlying physical factor that induces disease. So, when diet is modified, the underlying problem is also influenced. Ayurveda primarily evaluates the diet based on the energetic qualities of the food, and its effect on the doshas.
A typical patient visit involves an elaborate, in-depth interview process and detailed physical examination (including pulse and tongue diagnoses), addressing all major and minor symptoms on mental, emotional, physical and spiritual health in order to determine the dominant dosha(s). Following analysis of the doshas, specific dietary recommendations may be given in order to address the then dominant imbalance of the dosha(s).
Ayurveda teaches the language of nature so that one can take control of one's own karma, to reveal the secret healing powers of nature. Ayurvedic nutrition is a safe, non-toxic, non-addictive and effective alternative approach to health care for the entire family.
